‘Well, a simple kind of life never did me no harm,
raising me a family and working on the farm.
My days are all filled with an easy country charm,
thank God I’m a country boy.’
I honestly think that the journey to this collection of Flora’s dahlias all started with a decision my Dad made before I was even born.
He did what most boys from white-collar families did back in the 60’s - went to work in the family business and trained as a Quantity Surveyor. But it didn’t take many years for him to figure out that it wasn’t what he wanted to do with his life – he itched to be working outside with his hands and growing things in the soil. So he took the very brave move of purchasing a large block of land in Point Wells, and developed it into a market garden…and so started my lifetime of dirty hands, grubby knees and a love of being able to grow things.
So I literally do thank God that my Dad was a country boy! I doubt my life would have led me to growing flowers if I had been a city kid.
Flora’s Country Boy has beautiful two-toned orange and red blooms, with slightly rusty tones. I find dahlias like this with a different colour on the back of the petals intriguing!
